Termites: The Exterminators

Termites are insects and they feed on wood. They make colonies underground and within the colonies there is a queen who lays the eggs. Workers collect food and supplies and build galleries also where they live. Soldiers protect workers and their colonies. More than 80% of the colony is based on workers. After the digestion of wood, it is used as nutrition by the whole colony. It is a myth that termites will eat all kind off wood, they only digest dead or dry wood which is basically the kind of wood that people use in their household. It makes the termites very dangerous because they can severely affect the structure of the house in danger. Termites can also destabilize the building.

In fact the damage caused by the termites is unimaginable if it is taken lightly and not properly treated.  In France, there are places in south west of France and in Paris where termites have caused havoc. The reason being, weather and humidity is ideally suited for insects like termites.

However, there is a cure for this termite problem, as a precaution and also for the treatment of termites. Three kinds of barriers are used which are chemical, physical and physio-chemical barrier.

Out of these three, the least adequate one is chemical barrier because it can cause nuisance to residents and cause damage during installation. The residents might also have to relocate for a while and also it can be a health risk for them.

Physical barriers are considered to be more effective means to prevent passage of termites. Physical barriers contain layers of granite particles. Sometimes mesh stainless steel is also used instead of granite particles. Termites are famous of passing through concrete walls but when they pass through this physical barrier they are severely harmed during the process.

Physical and chemical barriers stop termites from going through its treatment termites and thus isolating their colony. These insects are killed by insecticide by trapping them. Insecticides contain fibre same as wood but the termite eats them, the poison travels with the termite and into the colony, where it spreads and kill other termites.

Barrier can only be located during construction. The key point is that, during placement one should be very careful because, if there is slimmest of crack then whole exercise goes to waste. For this reason only a specialist should be hired instead of an amature.

Interesting fact about termites is that they fear light. That is the reason we hardly ever see them on any surface of wood. Termites need specific conditions to live in. they require oxygen, humidity and certain level of temperature. They also require air pressure and dry wood should be in the vicinity as well.

Wood is not the only source of food for the termites. They also pray upon paper and cardboard because both these item have a key ingredient called cellulose. Cotton and sawdust can also be targeted by termites. All these things are present in every home, which makes it perfect candidate for termite attack.
